All About Dothan
When I moved to
Dothan in July of last year, I was in for a real treat. I went from a city with
many suburbs with interstates and Milos to a smaller city that lacked Jim N
Nick's Barbecue and Milos and some other great stores. (Y'all can't tell that I
miss Milos at all, can ya?)
The Post Office:
Yes, there are some
cons to living in Dothan, but there are many perks. For instance, I believe
that the Dothan Post Office in the center of downtown should be the poster
child for every post office in the nation. The post office workers there
deserve a raise in the very least. They are always extremely patient and sweet
even when there are incredibly long lines and rude people. And yes, they do
have extremely long lines. However, unlike the post offices back home, the
lines here usually have at least 15 people and last about 30 minutes. Back
home, a line of 3-5 people would last the same amount of time. The workers
always give their respective customers their undivided attention for however
long the customers need them. They legit kick butt. I enjoy going to that
particular post office because I know that the workers genuinely care. There is
one post office guy who always jokes with me about the name of my Amazon
business. He never ceases to make me laugh. So, if you ever need to ship
something or to buy some stamps while in the Dothan area, make sure that you
visit the downtown location.
The Food:
I love my food
places as much as the next girl, trust me. Luckily, Dothan home-grown
restaurants do not disappoint in the least.
The Blue Plate:
There are two
locations in Dothan, but I have only visited one unfortunately. If you want
good ole Southern comfort food, make sure to drop by The Blue Plate. They have
some killer cobbler and some tasty beans grown in the neighboring communities.
I personally suggest the meatloaf with two different peas for sides. If you
have any remaining room, grab a dessert.
Zach's Family
Restaurant:
This restaurant
provides some AMAZING Southern food. It is served like a meat and three, but
the portions you get are quite large and filling. They are usually open at
lunch, but make sure to get there early. If you get there late, the line is
basically out the door. Again, it is a testament to their incredible food.
However, you should know that they are closed on Saturdays. I have been
disappointed many times when I have forgotten that small fact.
Smoky Joe's
Barbecue:
If you can go to
only one place in Dothan, go here. They have the best food, but I am definitely
biased. Barbecue is my favorite kind of food, and this restaurant might become
my favorite barbecue place. (And that is saying a lot.) If you like fall-off-the-bone
ribs, amazing pulled pork, and home-cooked sides, Smoky Joe's is the place for
you.
Dobb's Barbecue:
This place is a
hole-in-the-wall, been there since the early 1900's kinda place. They have an
unique kind of barbecue and some amazing sweet tea. My mom especially loves the
strawberry shortcake, which is made in house. I really like their French fries
and barbecue sauce. If you want a true Dothan original that has some age, then
check out Dobb's Barbecue.
